One New York man has been killed by the NYPD for doing absolutely nothing but being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Akai Gurley was gunned down in East New York late Thursday night as he and his girlfriend, Melissa Butler, were walking into a poorly lit hallway. According to the New York Daily News, the couple came across two cops and Akai got shot in the chest.

Melissa and Akai made it down two flights of stars before he passed out. The 28-year-old man was then taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“He didn’t do nothing wrong,” Melissa told the “Daily News” in an interview. “He was just standing there and they shot him. He was an innocent man.”

Melissa is having a hard time trying to understand how this could have happened. She and Akai, who was unarmed at the time, didn’t pose any threat to the police. On top of that, she recalls that the cops didn’t even explain why they shot at Akai.

“They didn’t give no explanation,” she added. “They didn’t identify themselves. They just started shooting.”

In a press conference on Friday, NYPD Comissioner Bill Bratton stated that the fatal shooting was the result of a “coincidence of events” and that the officer’s gun may have gone off accidently. Admitting that Akai was a “total innocent” in this tragedy, Bill informed reporters that he was shot by a rookie officer. The cop, who has been identified as Peter Liang, is so new to the force that he was still in his probationary period with the NYPD.
