Ever since I turned age 40, whenever I went to my gynecologist for my annual check-up, she would always write out an order so I could schedule a mammogram as soon as possible.  I confess.  Sometimes I would never schedule it because it was always such an uncomfortable, downright painful experience. Remembering all that squeezing and squashing of my breasts always made me want to say “Nooooooo!” to my mammogram.  Well, after getting a mammogram at the Comprehensive Breast Care Center at DeKalb Medical at Hillandale, I’m calling it a “Yes! Ma’am-o-gram.”

The breast center has a very spa-like atmosphere.  Everything about it seemed to be designed with comfort in mind.  The space has been recently renovated and I thought the decorating was very tastefully done and pleasing to the eye.

From the moment I walked in, the staff welcomed me and made me feel at ease.  I was even offered fresh coffee and was told that free wi-fi was available. There was even a computer station available for me to use. I was thinking, “Mama’s mammogram was never like this.”

As I was finishing up my coffee, my Mammography Technologist greeted me in the reception area then led me to a dressing area. I was told to change for the exam and was given my own locker with a key. I was so surprised to find that I wouldn’t have to wear one of those standard issued, ugly hospital gowns.  Instead, she handed me a comfy, stylish robe, just like at a spa!

During the actual exam, my mammography technologist was warm and supportive, guiding me through every aspect of the exam, which put my fears to rest.  I felt like she really cared about my well-being.  And it eased my mind when she told me that the machine she was using was the latest state-of-the-art technology.  It’s called Siemens MAMMOMAT digital mammography. It glows with calming, mood altering color and gently plays soothing music which made my mammogram a more peaceful experience.  I also found out that, these “smart” machines adapt to each woman’s breast size so there was no unnecessary or painful squeezing and squashing.

Plus, the heightened accuracy of digital mammography, versus film, means women have to schedule fewer call-back appointments to obtain additional images. Once my exam was over, I was told that my results would be sent to my referring physician within 24 hours.  Wow!

After going through the Comprehensive Breast Care Center at DeKalb Medical at Hillandale, I realized my old fears about getting a mammogram were unfounded.  Get your next mammogram done there and I know you’ll get the care you need with the compassion you deserve. But I feel that I got that and then some because I won’t be saying “No!” to mammograms anymore. From now on, I’ll say “Yes Ma’am!” to mammograms at the Comprehensive Breast Care Center at DeKalb at Hillandale.
