Strawberry Letter: Hurt and Confused

Dear Steve and Shirley,

I’m a 42-year-old single mom raising my teenage daughter on my own, after getting out of an abusive marriage. I vowed that I would never let anyone get close to me again. After 12 years of being alone, it hit me that my daughter would soon be leaving the nest and I would be alone. So I went online to find a man and I found one that I just couldn’t pass up. It was a feeling of he’s the one. We talked for a bit and then 3 weeks later, no word from him. I’m not one to pursue a man, but I just couldn’t let it go.

I called and texted him on his birthday and still no answer. A week later, I sent a message on the site that we met on. He apologized and asked if he could get another chance. Great, I’ve never had a man to apologize before, so he’s got to be something special. So we finally met. We have conflicts about speaking to each other on a daily basis. I do most of the calling. When I don’t hear from him or get a call back, I freak out because of insecurities from my past. So recently me and this man had a nice date night. This past Friday, we even spoke on the phone. He was getting a new phone and was supposed to transfer his line over to the new phone. So when he called and left me a message to call him on the new phone, he called me “baby.” That was the last time I spoke to him.

I have tried calling him, but no answer. At first it rang and went to voicemail, but no mailbox is set up. Now, I get “the person can’t take calls at this time” message. So I decided to block my number and see what I get. It rings then goes to voice mail — mailbox is still not set up. I’m having the hardest time understanding. I was baby on Friday and I am being blocked on Monday.

What should I do? I just want an answer on what went wrong. Am I asking for too much?
