Congressman Bobby Rush was kicked off of the House floor this morning for wearing a hoodie in support of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who was shot dead in Sanford, Florida by George Zimmerman last month.

Referring to the Trayvon Martin murder case as an “American tragedy,” Rush took a few minutes to give his take on the case.

“Too often this violent act that resulted in the murder of Trayvon Martin is repeated in the streets of our nation,” Rush said during the general statements portion of this morning’s House session. “I applaud the young people all across the land who are making a statement about hoodies, about the real hoodlums in this nation. Particularly those who tread on our laws wearing official quasi-official clothes.”

The Chicago congressman and former Black Panther out of Chicago’s southside then took of his suit coat to reveal his gray hoodie. He put on a pair of darksun glasses, pulled his hood over his head and continued on with his statement. Rush was warned to remove his hoodie by the chair of the session, but ignored the request. He was escorted off of the Floor soon after by the House’s Sergent of Arms.
